Re: [gentoo-dev] Last rites: app-admin/salt, dev-python/pytest-salt-factories, dev-python/boto
Hi Patrick, The salt ebuild has been refactored to remove the tests and modules that require dev-python/boto, and the mask has been removed. Salt has a lot of users, and it would be doing them a disservice to remove it from the tree. Salt is not trivial to distribute, because upstream wants us to run curl -o bootstrap-salt.sh -L https://bootstrap.saltproject.io Thank you for saving the salt ebuild. Re: [gentoo-dev] [RFC] Gentoo Bugzilla: new resolution for bugs closed due to last rites
I think we should add a new bug resolution that would more precisely cover closing bugs due to packages being removed. Right now, whichever resolution we use (be it WONTFIX, OBSOLETE, etc.), we aren't able to easily distinguish whether the resolution was used "normally" or due to last rites. Having a dedicated resolution (technical name RESO/PKGREMOVED) would make this clear. Furthermore, it would make it easier to reopen bugs if the packages are ever reintroduced. Nice idea. RESO/PKGREMOVED sounds very reasonable to me. Hi Marecki, this is a very powerful package with many users. Thank you for maintaining it till now. Could you address the exact problems to upstream, so they are aware and can improve it? I think not only Gentoo, but also other distributions suffer if it does not build smooth. Looks to me as if the package is not broken now, but there is a lack of manpower to update it. 30 days is the minimum for a removal. I suggest to keep it for a few more months. [gentoo-dev] Re: Standard parsable format for profiles/package.mask file
Hi all, I want to suggest a standard format for profiles/package.mask, for multiple reasons: Sounds sensible. +1 The first line of the "#"-prefixed explanation block must be of the format "${AUTHOR_NAME} <${EMAIL}> (${SINGLE_DATE})" when the date is of format -MM-DD, in UTC timezone. Can we drop this? Or, at least, relax this. I usually just enter my locale date here and like to avoid having to think about that UTC is potentially in a different date. I also can not remember any situation where the date being in UTC matters. Plus, if you want accurate timestamps, then the git commit/author date is here for you. :) I think for the same reason UTC full timestamp makes sense: The person who adds an entry to the package.mask file does not care about a few hours and simply rounds the time up. The scripts which evaluate the .mask file have a proper time stamp. For a script it is trivial to work with time, if you have UTC in a standard format. But it is painful, if you just have a date and do not know the timezone. So I think you and I really want UTC here. -- Best, Jonas OpenPGP_signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Re: [gentoo-dev] [RFC] Removing the distinction between UNCONFIRMED and CONFIRMED bugs
Hi all, I'd like to propose replacing the current UNCONFIRMED and CONFIRMED bug states with a simple NEW state. Why? 1. Only a handful of developers actually uses these two statuses in a meaningful way. 2. Some users are confused and demotivated by having their bugs stay UNCONFIRMED for a long time. As someone who is very active on bugzilla I think the users are happy about - real activity and - polite, precise and clear answers Renaming tags will rather confuse. Yes, some tickets are open for long times (this is not a Gentoo-only problem) We should not hide this with Newspeak. I suggest to keep it as it is, because sometimes it makes sense to confirm a bug. Are not demotivated, because of the name of the tag. They are demotivated, if - bugs remain open/unanswered for long time - they are told "my dev time is too expensive for your problems" in an impolite way -- Best, Jonas

Hi Peter, # Removal after 2023-01-01. I set the delay a bit longer than 30 days so that users have more time to react. If you or others really need this package, report here or in the ticket and we can find a solution. We do not want to break our users system, if we can find another solution including reinstating an upstream repository. But we also do not want to invest time in a dead horse. I think it's a bad idea to remove a package if "Upstream Homepage and SRC_URI is gone" and "Gentoo is the last distro with this package" are the only reasons... A project should always have a real upstream source and not rely on remains in our mirrors. -- Best, Jonas

You can also combine it with https://securitytxt.org/ Here is an example: https://www.bsi.bund.de/.well-known/security.txt The line CSAF: https://cert-bund.de/.well-known/csaf/provider-metadata.json tells where to find the csaf data. -- Best, Jonas
Re: [gentoo-dev] [RFC] A new GLSA schema
[2] https://oasis-open.github.io/csaf-documentation/ Oh I see, I'd missed the actual link to CSAF, sorry. My fault. I should not add xkcd links in future. I'll take a look. It's not clear to me yet if this is going to be a good fit for distributions though, as we're not a normal "vendor". The major idea of CSAF is to use it optionally along with CPE, CVE, security.txt These are fully compatible and complete each other. We are a "vendor" in this scheme. You can find already CVEs assigned to the product with the CPE cpe:2.3:a:gentoo: So we are the vendor "gentoo". Perhaps gentoo_project would be more intuitive but currently it is "gentoo". Are you aware of any other Linux distros using this? Langley Rock from Red Hat seems to be part of the editors team. So I guess Redhat/Centos are on the way. Re: [gentoo-dev] proposal: use only one hash function in manifest files
Hi I'd like to propose the following for portage: - Only support one "secure" hash function (such as sha2, sha3, blake2, etc) - Only generate and parse one hash function in Manifest files - Remove support for multiple hash functions No, this has no benefit. In other words, what are we actually getting by having _both_ SHA2-512 and BLAKE2b for every file in every Manifest? Implementations are often broken and we have to expect zero day attacks on hashes and on signatures. Hence it does not hurt to have a second hash. It is very likely that we can not trust in X for a while in the next years, but it is very unlikely that two different implementations are affected. Additionally calculating a second hash does not cost anything. This was also the outcome of the discussion some time ago here. -- Best, Jonas

Re: [gentoo-dev] [RFC] New category: net-servers
Hi, I've been packaging some Gemini protocol servers and clients in ::guru overlay, and they all go to net-misc category. I think it would be better to split browsers and servers for non-www protocols (like Finger, Ident, Gemini and Gopher) into separate categories. all servers without www servers means, we should move ssh, imap, pop, mysql... there too I think we need a more precise definition if we do not want this. -- Best, Jonas

[gentoo-dev] [RFC] dissolving project netmon
Dear all, the project netmon is openly discussed as "dead" since years. We should not blame its members, but the fact that the packages in netmon are very different and should not be clustered in one project. Thanks to everyone who helped out with bugs assigned to netmon. I suggest to reassign the netmon packages to m-n. This will motivate others to grab the packages and reflect the real status. Are there any objections to dissolving netmon? -- Best, Jonas
Re: [gentoo-dev] 2021 retrospective
Hi, in the spirit of our "2020 in retrospect & happy new year 2021!" front page article, https://www.gentoo.org/news/2021/01/15/new-year.html which was rather well received, I'd already like to start collecting news from 2021! Suggestions, text snippets, illustrations welcome- either as a reply here on-list, or directly to me. My suggestion -8<- A series of online workshops in German language started in 2021. The meetings take place in BBB every 2 months on the 3rd Saturday of the month. The events had been very well received and we also want to provide workshops in English starting on 2022-02-19. All events are listed on https://gentoo-ev.org/ ->8- Best, Jonas
Re: [gentoo-dev] [RFC] Removing SHA512 hash from Manifests
Hi, Back during the 2017 discussion, Infra came to the conclusion that we're going to keep SHA512 for a transition period, then remove it, and stay with a single hash algorithm. In my opinion, we have kept it long enough. WDYT? As far I remember we agreed to keep two different hashes. The idea is, that if one hash is no longer safe to use, we still have a short period for migration. If we use only one hash, gentoo is vulnarable to "sudden problems". The everyday news show us, that broken implementations are possible and that this scenario is likely to happen over the years. The benefit of removing the second hash is negligible. So we should keep two different hashes. -- Best, Jonas

[gentoo-dev] Cleanup of sunrise remains
Dear all, Sunrise was discontinued on June 2016. [1] Its remains confuse our users. There are several places, where sunrise is still advertised. Now it is time for the final shutdown. If there is any useful package left, please pick it up, overhaul it and move it either to the tree, or guru.
