Re: [gentoo-dev] Good-bye

2007-11-28 Thread Gustavo Felisberto
There is no away to describe the amount of fun it has been working with you and
reading your inputs into the future of Gentoo. I hope you will continue to keep
your eyes open for this children of yours.

Best of luck for you future endeavors.

 Dear Gentoo Devs and Users,

The time has finally come for me to resign from Gentoo. I've been
meaning to do it for many months now, but the logistics took a little
bit of time. Effective Monday, Nov. 26, I will no longer consider
myself an official Gentoo developer. Before then I will make commits to
two or so packages for which James Rowe is the official maintainer and I
was his proxy. Justin Bronder (jsbronder) has agreed to take over the
 proxy maintainership for them.

I've been here a long time and I've made many many friends (and, I
suppose, a few enemies). For both, I'm grateful. There are too many
people to thank -- you all know who you are :P.

I'll be subscribed to this list for a while, and of course, I'll still
be on IRC in various channels. For those of you wishing to maintain
email contact with me, I can be reached at: seemant (at) kulleen (dot)

I hope that the fun in Gentoo will return soon. It certainly seems like
there's been a positive tide turning as of late, so I leave with
 optimism.

 Be well, everyone.

 Thanks,

 Seemant

[gentoo-dev] QA issue: No stable skype in Tree

2007-06-13 Thread Gustavo Felisberto
A little background info: Right now there are three versions of
net-im/skype in the tree:

1 - the 1.2 series (with a stable version)
2- the 1.3 series also with a stable version
3- the 1.4 series with a ~/hardmask version

Also the skype license states that we cannot mirror it's files (this
will be need later)

The 1.4 series will have a version released soon that skype wants to
become the standard stable version, it has many new features and better
audio quality.

I as Gentoo Dev and Skype Betatester was informed that starting on June
19th Skype will no longer provide downloads for the 1.2 and 1.3 version,
and that means that 1.4 will be released some time before. For Gentoo
that means that starting from the 19th users on the stable profile will
not be able to install skype as no files will be available from upstream.

So the thing is, as soon as Skype releases the 1.4 stable version I'm
going to have it in tree and we need to have it tested ASAP on the
stable profile. My thing is with the time between, we will have 5 days
tops or users will not be able to install.

Suggestions:
1- in the 19th remove skype 1.4 from the tree
2- Make 1.4 ebuilds empty and leave them on the tree and ewarn the
users to use the unstable skype

The first option will trigger portage errors and prompt users to open
bugs until we have a stable 1.4, the second gives us a chance to explain
the issue.

Any alternatives?

[gentoo-dev] PORTAGE_BINHOST Madness

2007-01-04 Thread Gustavo Felisberto
According to man portage:

   --getbinpkg (-g)
Using the server and location defined in PORTAGE_BINHOST
(see make.conf(5)), portage will download the
information from each binary package found and it will use that
information to help build the dependency
list. This option implies -k. (Use -gK for binary-only merging.)

   --getbinpkgonly (-G)
This option is identical to -g, as above, except it will not
use ANY information from the local machine.
All binaries will be downloaded from the remote server without
consulting packages existing in the local
  packages directory.

Ok, so what is diference? -g will fetch ALL packages in PORTAGE_BINHOST and use
them to construct the deps and the other..

[gentoo-dev] Orphaned packages

2006-09-18 Thread Gustavo Felisberto
Due to my work for the next two semesters being increased I'm going to have to
drop my maintainer status for some of the packages I handle. I'll still keep a
small number of packages that I really don't want to let go.
Also, due to the fact that I'll no longer be running ~amd64 but am going the
stable way it is possible I'll give a greater help there.

The list of orphans is:

app-crypt/qca
app-crypt/qca-tls
net-ftp/pure-ftpd
net-ftp/pureadmin
net-ftp/proftpd
net-im/jit
net-im/jud
net-im/mercury-bin
net-im/pymsn-t
net-im/psi
net-im/aim-transport
net-im/mu-conference
net-im/yahoo-transport
net-im/msn-transport
net-im/gabber
net-im/jabberd
net-im/gg-transport
net-mail/sendEmail
net-misc/blogtk
sci-misc/netlogo-bin
x11-themes/gkrellm-themes
x11-themes/zinf-themes
x11-themes/gdm-themes

I'll update the metadata.xml to maintainer-needed during the next days.

Have you tried contacting them, and asking them for a license for

 Best regards,

Yes i tried that about a year and a half, and the reply was they were not
interested.

[gentoo-dev] New virtual/jabber-server

2005-04-16 Thread Gustavo Felisberto
Right now there is just one jabber server in the tree marked as stable,
it is net-im/jabberd . But there already is ejabberd in the tree (going
to be ~x86 soon).

Most of the transports available right now depend on having jabberd 1.4
installed to run, but the next wave of transports are not dependent on a
prticular jabber daemon. So i would like to make them depend on jabberd
or ejabberd (or one other jabber server when it is available).
So if no one comes up with a better idea i'll be adding
virtual/jabber-server in a few days.
