Math problems are generally agreed to be reasonably universal, however, tho that can change if wording is chosen to try to defeat a machine solution (running into the language problem again). Spelling captchas... tend to run into problems with folks that can't spell. That's apparently a big enough problem a lot of sites try and reject spelling captchas.
