Hello, IRC communication is not that obsolete, it still serves its purpose :) Plus XMPP still does not support ZNC style quite well so you cant be online 24/7 and have same chat-data/history on all your clients, unless you ssh somewhere on box where you run CLI XMPP client. OTOH quite few gentoo devs use XMPP in form of google-talk facebook-chat or some good old standalone XMPP server... Gentoo will always look towards the future for ways to communicate. Instead of using a currently popular format such as Jabber we are trying to predict the curve so that we dont have to switch from another obsolete format in 5 years time. Currently, research has told us that that the best format for communication is MSN

Infra ran a Jabber server for developers from at least 2004 (maybe earlier, I wasn't heavily involved then) until mid 2008. Usage was very low (peaked at 6 devs connected in the year I watched it), and didn't justify the hardware manpower resources it too. Our LDAP instead has a gentooIM attribute, and 64 developers have XMPP accounts list (72 unique JIDs). A stable public XMPP-MUC only instance (no local users) may have some value, but I wouldn't expect it to have anywhere near the turnout of IRC. -- Robin Hugh Johnson Gentoo Linux: Developer, Trustee Infrastructure Lead E-Mail : robb...@gentoo.org GnuPG FP : 11AC BA4F 4778 E3F6 E4ED F38E B27B 944E 3488 4E85
