USB to Floppy interfaces won't do it as they are all made for the data 
rate used in 3 1/2" floppies.


Maybe I'll just move this system along my desk and put it under my

I am a little earlier with gentoo  - but unfortunately I don't have any
media/machines from that era - great project!  I started with Redhat 4.0
sometime in the late 90's.

You beat me by  6 mth .  I had recently built my 2nd machine
& had been using Mandrake in the 1st, but they were slow with their release.
I tried Suse + Slackware, but couldn't get them set up properly,
so I thought I might as well try that new thing people were talking about.
I followed the install instructions faithfully, booted
& found myself with a working version of Gentoo !  I've never looked back.

I still have the original CDs for Mandrake from 2000, my 1st Linux,

It works now, its just not quite authentic. Follow the instructions in 
the wiki page I linked, or if you can't wait, there is a link to a root 
filesystem image for Virtualbox. I have hosted all the source files I 
have found, so go ahead and do a 2003 stage1 install.


KDE is 3.1.1 not 3.1.1a

pam_login is 3.11, not 3.10.

net-tools-1.60-gentoo-extra.tar.bz2 I had to remake, based on the 
comments in the ebuild. The file size and md5sum don't match but I used 
2021 tar to put the bits together.


XFree is there, just not the version portage wanted to install.
