The Gentoo vmware team have been developing new ebuilds for vmware-workstation, vmware-player and vmware-server (and vmware-server-console), to help ease the maintenance of the shared modules and shared patches between these products. Since they all have a similar shared installer, and many use the same modules, it was a felt eclasses would be the best system for reducing the shared code between them. The first eclass is for installing the video and network modules that most vmware products use, but should also be able to deploy the modules used in a guest vmware, for the various tools packages. The second eclass if for installing the products themselves, which all tend to follow a similar install process, putting the files in similar locations, and maintaining a pseudo-installation-database used by the vmware configuration and init scripts.
