Consider mentioning this in #gentoo-fosdem on irc.freenode.net, which is
where the Gentoo devs & users who are going to FOSDEM generally gather.
Maybe you can meet up with everyone. There's usually a few Gentoo
dinners (one actual "Gentoo dinner" that everyone sign sup to, and just
informal dinners throughout the weekend as well), and an OpenPGP
key-signing event, for instance.

Good luck, and enjoy FOSDEM.

Re: [gentoo-portage-dev] Constraint-Based Dependency Solver for Portage: a prototype

2017-12-10 Thread Alexander Berntsen
Unfortunately I am way too busy to even entertain looking into this in
any detail. A few years ago I was hoping to work on something like this,
though in Agda (or possibly in Haskell or Coq), and do work on making
Portage much more modular so that you could actually pick whatever
dependency resolver you wanted -- even going as far as "Don't like the
resolution you were presented now? Try using another resolver" messages.
But alas that job ended before I got very far.

However, I wanted to take the time to drop you a tiny note of
encouragement. I think this looks really great, and I hope someone on
the team finds the time to look into it in more detail than me.

Interesting idea. We could have some (separate) portage-y helper tool
send a standardised email that could easily be filtered based on sender
and/or topic. 'emerge foo --thank' just thanks people, 'emerge foo
--thank="msg"' thanks people with a msg.

It's gimmicky and could be abused. But then again perhaps it wouldn't be
abused, and it would just be wholesome fun. Maybe someone would meet
their future lover via the thank-parametre.

What do you think?

Also, get rid of the period in the commit message. And we seem to...

Friends,

It's that time of year. I have been lead developer for a year, so we
need to have another election.

I've not been very good, nor attentive enough. So if you want to elect
someone else than me, I can understand that. If nobody else wants the
role, I can probably continue to reject, and even sometimes accept,
Zac's patches too; I don't mind.

I suggest we just nominate and vote in this thread. That's what we did

just go ahead.

On to nominations: I nominate Zac and Brian.

Let's do voting next week, and pick someone next Friday, unless anyone

[gentoo-portage-dev] Enforced OpenPGP signatures

2016-06-14 Thread Alexander Berntsen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Friends,

I saw Brian asking Michał to OpenPGP-sign his commits in IRC, to which
Michał quipped that we would have if it were enforced. So perhaps we
should just enforce it. Most of us do it -- but I see Zac not doing it
sometimes, seemingly at random. In any event, I don't think there's a
good reason *not* to sign things.

What do you think? And what's the procedure/who do we talk to, to get
a pre-push hook set up to enforce it?

Brian, could you upload the log to your devspace and link that instead
of the bpaste? It would be nice to have them all in the same place. If
you don't have the time, I can just put it up myself. I put the paste
to expire after one month.

Is it possible to elucidate this a bit more in a paragraph? Right now
it reads a bit like "but this fails because reasons -_o_-", but in the
future it might be nice to know said reasons.

Patch 1 and 2 look great. Patch 3 looks good to me, but obviously

You give no justification for the first commit. This commit message
has some grammar issues, so I don't know what you are trying to say in
it.

The bug has same relevant discussion. If you could give some reason
for reverting in patch 1, and clean up the message of patch 2, the
patches look good to me otherwise (although I'll have to test them of
course).

Note that you don't need a '\' inside parentheses in Python for patch 2.

I meant to ask if there is any existing precedent in Portage.
"Deprecated" would be my pick as well.

When submitting v2-patches, please submit them in-reply-to=the message
ID of the original thread.

The patch looks OK, but I don't recall us using the "OBSOLETE" phrase
in any documentation. Does anybody know any phrase we should be using
instead, and why we should be using that phrase instead?

Maybe we should pick a term ("OBSOLETE" is fine by me), and make it
"official" for these situations in the future.

[gentoo-portage-dev] [PATCH v2] news.py: Check only for major version when parsing

2016-05-19 Thread Alexander Berntsen
Only check the major version of news items, as GLEP 42 specifies an
upgrade path for them. Future revisions to news item formats may yield
minor number increments. GLEP 42 further ensures that only
forwards-compatible changes may incur, as incompatible changes demand a
major version increment.

I'll leave the final word to Zac, but the patch looks OK to me now. If

Sorry, I meant reverse the *docs* to mean "find things that are at
least 50% similar" rather than "cut off things that aren't above the
0.5 threshold". I.e. use an inclusive sentence. I feel that this is
more clear.

Yes, I just realised you checked if it were <=, not just <. I think
this is a bad idea. It's easily missed -- I just missed it last time
around. I would suggest to make it fail early, rather than set it to
0.0 which you then set to None. Just set it to None immediately.

This is likely a good place to briefly explain what a "fuzzy search"
is.

Also, I'm not sold on "seach-fuzzy" as opposed to "fuzzy-search". Is
there a particular reasoning for it? Since we don't seem to have a
standardised "verbs mean this, nouns mean this" anyway, I would use
the latter phrase.

You also need to document your note on regexes.

Lastly, you also need to document that a fuzzy search is slower than a
regular search.

> +.TP
> +.BR "\-\-search\-fuzzy\-cutoff CUTOFF"

This explanation is a bit heavy to read. And I think that using 0 to 1
isn't very nice. And calling the number "floating point" instead of
decimal isn't very useful nor nice. How about making it a percentage,
and describing it simply as a similarity percentage -- "package names
must be at least N% similar to the search term to appear in search
results". The option could then be called --seach-fuzzy-similarity,
or (in keeping with the previous suggestion)
- --fuzzy-search-similarity, or -- wait for it -- something similar. ;)
Of course if you agree with this, you'll have to reverse the code to
represent which results to show, rather than which ones to not show.

You should also document here what happens if there's a mistake in the
input.

> + "--search-fuzzy-cutoff": {

See comments above regarding how to explain what this actually does.

Is this a reasonable fallback? I guess so... but you need to mention
it in the manpage, as mentioned.

I also don't understand why the first one is just 0.0, but this one
is an error. Why aren't both either errors and revert to 0.8 cut-off
(or 80% similarity) or 0.0/100?

And this needs to go in the manpage too.

> + self.fuzzy_cutoff = 0.8 if fuzzy_cutoff is None else

See above.

> + fuzzy = False
Here's an interesting discussion: maybe this should be True? After
all, it's True in any modern search engine. What do you think?

I can't say much more than "ACK, probably makes sense" really. But
please test this *a lot* before merging it.

Regarding the merging of this patch, and th egencache patch that has
already been released: I thought we agreed that .29 should be *only*
the repoman merger, and then bug fixes go into a .30 where we try to
get a stable release with the new repoman. Why was egencache merged
anyway? Should we not merge repoman to stable ASAP before doing
anything else? That would make .29 easier.

Zac, Michał, & Mike (& Pavel, but he's on devaway and I haven't heard

more tangible? I know it is an annoying task, but please do it anyway.

be straitjackets!

[gentoo-portage-dev] 2.2.28

2016-02-03 Thread Alexander Berntsen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Friends,

I have added a tracker for 2.2.28[0] (and also cleaned up the 2.2.27
tracker). I've added all the bugs we've already fixed in git as
blockers, and also some bugs I think we should be looking to fix for
2.2.8; some of which I'll be looking to work on myself. If you
disagree with any of these, please feel free to remove them, but tell
me why you disagree. If you have other bugs, please add them, and
maybe describe them shortly here. I've mostly only addressed
documentation and emerge bugs.

Note that I've added some very old bugs simply because we need to get
in control of the mess -- so quite a few of them are likely RESOLVE
OBSOLETE candidates. But we need to resolve them rather than leave
them to rot.

Also note that if the bugs I've added aren't fixed, but we still need
a new release for some reason, that's fine, we'll just release it, and
change them to block the next tracker. But I want to encourage adding
as many bugs as possible as blockers, simply so we don't lose sight of
them. The small clerical task of updating a field is a small price to
pay when compared to bugs rotting.

Here are some bugs I have not added as blockers at the moment, but I
think maybe we (and by we, I guess I mostly mean Zac for most of
them...) should try to add a sort of step-by-step task for solving
them, as I think they are important:

[1] Bug 175808 (circular-deps) - emerge should intelligently solve
circular dependencies triggered by flags such as USE="doc"
[2] Bug 449094 Support for "passthru subslots" to rebuild all the
reverse dependency graph.

If you know of others, please post them.

If I've missed something else, please let me know.

Lastly, I'm going to update the wiki a bit. Clean it up slightly, and
add a "Current activity" section where I talk a bit about 2.2.28 and
the bugs we hope to fix. Maybe list some low-hanging fruits for the
release (and in general), and post them around on reddit or whatever
to try to generate some interest in the project.

Friends,

Both for our sake and in order to attract new developers, I think we
need to make sure our Wiki stuff is nice.

I have updated our main Wiki substantially:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/index.php?title=Project:Portage

Please make sure the information is correct and useful, and please
offer improvements if you have any ideas.

I will update the following:
* https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Portage/Membership
* https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Portage/Ongoing-TODO

The Membership wiki is somewhat outdated/obtuse, and I'd like to add a
low-hanging fruit section to the Ongoing-TODO, and brush it up to
reflect the new release.

Brian, can you make sure that these are up to date:
*
*

Everyone, please check if you have anything to contribute to:
*

Any feedback and help is very useful -- thanks!

I think 2 sounds OK. But the test is meant to catch a regression on
fd_pipes; perhaps the test should be changed rather than the code.

I read through these ages ago, and I think you've incorporated my
feedback from back then. But like back then, I don't have too much
feedback to offer as this is certainly not an area of Portage I'm
nearly as familiar with as you are. It mostly just LGTM.

There are some minor issues with commit messages. Like how they
randomly don't have full stops in some sentences for some reason.
"fetches.py: Create new isVcsDir() in the vcs plugins" says "teh"
instead of "the".

ThirdPartyMirrors is a bit low on documentation.

I expect Zac will be of far more help than me. In any event, thanks a
lot for working on this!

You asked about a release on IRC -- did you want to get a release out
before merging this? I would be fine with either way. Let me know what
you need from me, and I'll get on it ASAP.

I just remembered -- did I not ask you to add a bug for this? Did you?
If so, please add it to the commit message -- see the other messages
for how. Just add (bug ) to the header, and X-Gentoo-Bug and
X-Gentoo-Bug-url to the message.

If you did not add a bug, let me know.

I will push this once you get me a v3 with an updated commit message,
or a NACK on the bug add.

This doesn't motivate the use of MD5 at all. You *do* do that in the
bug report though, so I'd copy in the motivation.

You have an English børk here -- "could be have".

[gentoo-portage-dev] How do we want to deal with Arfrever's bunch of patches?

2015-12-12 Thread Alexander Berntsen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Resending this from an address that will actually reach the list...

Friends,

As I'm sure you've noticed, Arfrever pushed a bunch of unreviewed
stuff. Michał reverted some of them as they were breaking changes in
addition to being unreviewed (oh, and of course they don't follow the
commit message format -- why would they). There's a bunch left.

Do we want to cherry-pick Zac's patches (i.e. revert Arfrever's
patches), and have him put them up for review as usual? It's a bit of
a mess because of Zac's patches. If we go down this route it would
likely be easiest for Zac to revert them, since he'll be the more
confident regarding what to keep in the ensuing merge conflicts.

Arfrever asked that someone review the patches and keep them if they
are OK, and revert only the ones that are problematic. I think this
would be OK for now, but obviously not something we want to encourage
or allow in the future.

I will not sanction a public history rewrite, but in general I'm open
to other suggestions.
