Don't you read the replies you get? Neil already explained to you how stupid 
it is to use make.conf from the livecd (yes, we mean *really* stupid). 
Instead copy make.conf.example to make.conf and go from there.

Umm.. I sure hope it gets your settings from your stacking 
profile, /etc/make.conf and /etc/portage/package.use. If it doesn't I'd 
consider it pretty useless (the man page may be out of date). I'm pretty sure 
it saves your changes in /etc/make.conf.
