it appear that it is not wrong with the gdm config.. must be

I don't know what it can be. But, you can backup you config file and
use the default one by doing this:
# cd /etc/X11/gdm
# cp gdm.conf gdm.conf.bkp
# cp factory-gdm.conf gdm.conf
Check if the factory file is spelled like that, I don't remember right
now. If using the default
