I'm posting this in case it troubles anyone else in the future. I made some time to revisit this problem and found that kworker/0:2 was pegged at 100% CPU. Google advised this is a kernel bug, according to this report at least and disabling the corresponding interrupt (gpe16 in my case) appears to have brought the overheating under control: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1115658 -- Regards, Mick
