OK, I find this rather bogus but it's fixed. modules-update will clear an existing modprobe.conf file and leave you with nothin then there is an error in any of the files it's working on. Worse it gives you no messages that it's done this. In my case the error was in the above file. Turns out I needed to say 'install'. Nowhere did I find any documentation on this. Only a bug report from last year that hasn't been acted upon yet.
