I cannot explain the following. I was about the try the last suggestions (use kill -9; load more sound modules) when I, just for fun, retried alsamixer. I did the usual unmute everything and it somehow just worked.
I did nothing new and would not be surprised if, during the next flight, the headphones fail again, but it is clearly not a kernel problem. Thanks you all for your help. allan
