[gentoo-user] weird goings-on with Firefox

2018-04-18 Thread Philip Webb
I normally use Firefox 52.6.0 , the latest stable version.

A few weeks ago, for no apparent reason, it suddenly lost some functions :
the Red Cross (recall most recent item) disappeared from the toolbar,
the session manager disappeared altogether, the items in the tab organiser
couldn't show the title of the items when moused over,
but only a small empty outline box instead.
I tried remerging FF & restarting it, but that made no difference.

Equally suddenly today, it all reappeared as before : what was going on ?

Yesterday, I happened to notice a ghost item in one of my desktops,
visible in my KDE panel & hidden under the Konsole running there.
It turned out to be the FF previous-sessions' box
& the date of the latest available session showed it was some weeks ago.
It was after I closed that box that FF returned to normal.

I was about to ask for advice here, but instead am recording the facts
in case they help someone else. Comments welcome.

I'm running gentoo-sources-4.16.2 with nvidia-drivers-396.18-r1 on a GTX 660,
without any patches. No issues here.

Have any of you tried the 396 version? That's the one the web seems to
say NVidia is targeting for this kernel.
