[gentoo-user] Death of KDE-4?

2016-05-25 Thread Peter Humphrey
Hello list,

Today I noticed a large number of kde package files being fetched during my
daily --sync, and then I got this in emerge -auDvU:

emerge: there are no ebuilds built with USE flags to satisfy
"sys-auth/polkit-qt[qt5]".
!!! One of the following packages is required to complete your request:
- sys-auth/polkit-qt-0.112.0-r1::gentoo (Change USE: +qt5)
(dependency required by "kde-frameworks/kauth-5.21.0::gentoo" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-frameworks/kconfigwidgets-5.21.0::gentoo" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-frameworks/kiconthemes-5.21.0::gentoo" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-frameworks/kbookmarks-5.21.0::gentoo" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-frameworks/kio-5.21.0::gentoo" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-frameworks/kinit-5.21.0::gentoo" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "kde-frameworks/kded-5.21.0::gentoo" [ebuild])

I have -plasma and -qt5 in make.conf because I'm not ready to go to KDE-5
yet. Does this signal the end of KDE-4 in Gentoo, or can I work round the
blocker somehow?

Dear Peter,

I have just synced and I have no problems. Are you sure to have masked
plasma 5 suff?

My masks are:

kde-plasma/*
kde-frameworks/*:5
kde-apps/*:5
kde-misc/*:5
>=kde-apps/kde4-l10n-16.04.1

Maybe kde4-l10n is pulling the packages?

Why does portage want to install kded-5.21.0? That's what is starting
the chain leading to polkit-qt needing to be built against Qt5.

emerge -t is the place to start.

Sorry for not answering earlier, but I rebuilt another kde4 version, starting
from a clean system backup. I'm finished now and had my first test login. Of
course, the problem is still there, but neither dmesg nor any Xorg*.log
contains glibc.

~/.xsession-errors however was a little more informative, but only a little.
I've attached the relevant parts, but they don't tell much.

Re: [gentoo-user] Adding a gentoo workstation to Active Directory network

2008-08-10 Thread Jil Larner

Hello,

I recently set up samba to allow authentification against Active
Directory for file sharing on a CentOS 4.5. Even if their installer is
supposed to do it correctly, it didn't work the way I wanted, so I had
to understand how to set it up manually.

The main problem I found with documentations is that there's no one-shot
documentation that allows you to join a domain if you meet so many
obscure error messages like I had.

I have more knowledge on Gentoo than centOs (so redhat), but what I say
here has only been tested on centOS.

Unfortunately for you, I'm on hollydays and won't go back to office
until second part of October, so I can only tell you what I remember :

You need :
- a Kerberos client
- a ntp daemon to set your clock according to your domain controller
(more than 5 minutes offset will lead kerberos not to deliver tickets)

- samba with winbind support
- manually record your machine in the DNS used by AD

Set up samba with ads security (refer to the official samba howto)
Be sure your smb.conf has winbind configuration directives

Files I remember I updated (CentOS architecture) :
- /etc/samba/smb.conf
- /etc/sysconfig/network (for the hostname of your machine to be the
FQDN e.g. tux.mywindows.domain.corp and `hostname --fqdn` must
immediately answer) = /etc/conf.d/hostname on gentoo
- /etc/nsswitch.conf to add winbind for a few things
(passwd,group,shadow if I remember, with less priority than file;
otherwise it will be long to log in as a local user)
- /etc/krb5.conf /etc/krb.conf[backward compatibility, may not be needed
on gentoo; try without that's one file less to manage] (documentations
give the few lines required)

You'll also have to modify PAM config files for local access matching
against AD, but I didn't tried it.

Before you frag your brain out with samba and winbind, you must succeed
a `kinit mywindowsuser` and see your ticket with `klist`. And be sure
you can resolve local names with a nslookup. Some recommend you set the
name and ip of your Domain Controller (DC) in /etc/hosts to avoid DNS
failure.

To join a domain, use the net join ads command, as explained in the docs
: it must work. If it don't, don't look forward: solve this problem as
it means you cannot access your DC.

There's no need to configure LDAP if you use an AD architecture. And
unless your DC is configured otherwise, it should offer you all required
services (kerberos, ntp, dns).

Don't hesitate to set up the log level of samba to 4 or the example
value of the man page to get what's wrong.

Don't look for complex configuration : a few simple lines does the job
for matching AD. If you can identify against AD for file shares, then
you just ( :D ) have to set up pam for the main login. I'd say there are
3 or 4 winbind directives (uid/gid range, auto append defautl domain,
etc) in and 5 important samba directives smb.conf.

I hope this fragment can help you a little bit,
Jil.

Thanks everyone. I was actually hoping for a read the google, newb
response, as long as it had the right search terms, cause I didn't have a
clue what to google for :). So again, thanks, I've downloaded a pile of
howto's to my workstation and I work on it on my dead time.

Thanks for pointing me to SDDM. After looking at the source code [1]
that prepares the user session I think it's not correct.
The main problem is that it doesn't call "initgroups" when PAM is
enabled. This function is the one that loads the list of local groups
for the user.
PAM functions should be called afterwards to load additional groups
with for example pam_group.so, according to man pam_setcred(3)

This is confirmed by looking at the code of XDM for the same action,
which calls "initgroups" in all cases [2].
I found this piece of code interesting with for example :
# if defined(BSD) && (BSD >= 199103)
So it seems it's been around for a really long time !

I also found issue 416 on SDDM [3] on Github that seems to be the same
problem, but it has been closed, with a dubious explanation that this
would be caused by KDE kinit.
I don't believe it because KDE processes are launched with the user
session id, and therefore shouldn't be able to add system groups to
the session.
And if I look at the groups of sddm-greeter when it's running under
user "sddm", they are already incorrect before a KDE session is
opened.
mick@xxx ~ $ grep Groups /proc/$(pidof sddm-greeter)/status
Groups: 0 1 2 3 4 6 10 11 26 27 27 243

I will try to modify SDDM code to include "initgroups" where I suppose
it should be called.
This could result in a new bug or a pull request depending on the results...

better use of "initgroups" and "pam_setcreds", I hope.

@Remy Blank if you could try the patch and comment on the issue, that
may help SDDM project members to evaluate it.

Re: [gentoo-user] KDE and the new plasma 5 thing

2016-04-13 Thread Dale
Howdy,

Same topic sort of so going to try the same thread first. I've run up
on something weird but I'm not real sure where to start looking. This
is what I do and what I get in return. I have my desktop set to folder
view which gives me icons on my desktop. When I click on a folder, it
is supposed to open Konqueror. It does, it really does open konqueror.
It opens it with dozens of instances and more than once went over 100
before I could kill the thing. Obviously, I only need one instance.

My question. What program actually tells it to launch that first
instance? In other words, when I click on a folder, what is it that
tells Konqueror to open? I think I'd like to downgrade that package for
a bit. It seems to have a bug, a really bad one with a lot of legs.

How I got here. Since the plasma thing was crashing so much, I thought
a unstable plasma package might have it fixed. Well, it stopped
crashing after I keyworded a long list of packages and did the upgrade.
Thing is, now I get this multiple instances of Konqueror instead of just
one. Here is a list of those packages.

I figure one of those packages is responsible for this but none of them
are obvious to me as to if it is the one or not. Anyone have a clue
which one it could be?

Thanks.

The file-type icons are still be where they should be, but for some
reason they were no longer associated with their respective
mime types. I've now solved the problem for them by going to the 'file
association' part of system settings and editing the icons for the mime
types which were missing icons.

The program icons which do not show up in the Quicklaunches haven't
changed on my system. They also don't show up in the Kmenu, which uses
the same .desktop files -- I didn't realize that before because I
rarely look at the menu. AFAICS, all the icons that no longer show up
in the menu or the launchers are in /usr/share/pixmaps/. I can use
kmenuedit, which I think edits the .desktop files, to select the icons
which should be displayed, but they're still not displayed.

If you're going to try to dig all the way to the bottom first then
--ignore-world and --ignore-built-slot-operator-deps can be helpful for forcing
it to build what it needs to break a dependency loop. But do be aware that
things may cease to function during the intermediate stages.

If those are not sufficiently strong, then you can climb into the package repo
and start issuing ebuild commands yourself and it will do what it's told
without bothering about checking dependencies at all. Make sure you know what
you're doing...  Obviously...

But seriously, try disabling any overlays first if at all possible. It's quite
common for those to lag behind the main repo and turn things into a tangled
mess.

At this point the jackhammers have gone silent and I'm left with the
issue I had before:

tortoise ~ # emerge --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y world
--verbose --backtrack=40 --changed-deps --verbose-conflicts --pretend
--ignore-built-slot-operator-deps=y

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy
"media-libs/libsdl2[abi_x86_32?,alsa?,custom-cflags?,joystick?,nas?,opengl?,oss?,pulseaudio?,sound?,static-libs?,video?,X?]".

(dependency required by "media-libs/libsdl-1.2.60::poly-c" [ebuild])

(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-shell-42.5-r2::gentoo"
[installed])
(dependency required by
"gnome-extra/gnome-browser-connector-42.1::gentoo" [ebuild])

tortoise ~ #

I then checked my overlays, and it turns out I had an outrageously
bloated number of layers installed:

tortoise ~ # layman -l

 * poly-c    [Rsync ]
(rsync://rsync.gentoofan.org/poly-c )
 * wichtounet    [Git   ]
(https://github.com/wichtounet/wichtounet-overlay.git )

tortoise ~ #
#

I think one of those was because mainline had stopped maintaining
seamnokey and I needed it maintained. No idea what I was smoking when I
applied the other or even which is which. In all likelyhood I had a
problem and applying that overlay solved it and because I didn't have a
problem after solving said problem, I forgot about it and can't really
say what or even when it was I had that problem. All I have now is this
lingering sense that touching those overlays will result in misery and
suffering so it's best not to even look up how to remove either of them.

eclan still shows a large number of outdated packages on the system so
there is definitely lots of updating to work if I can get emerge out of
its current hissy-fit.
