I was also glad to hear about the new maintainers. The day after I heard the
project had served its purpose and was being abandoned I went to update one of
my few systems with udev instead of eudev and the build crashed and it took me
a couple hours to trick it into compiling correctly. I was a little worried
that might end up being prophetic. Whatever the exact differences are, eudev
still seems to build a little more reliably. Maybe it's just that the project
does a better job of informing people about changes to the build requirements...

When I switched from udev to eudev, it was as simple as uninstalling
udev and installing eudev.  I'd think as you do the reverse would work
now as well but as you point out, it may not.  I'd recommend going to a
console to do this and logging out of any GUIs as well.  Of course
restarting udev afterwards as well.

I also saw the post about new maintainers.  I'm hopeful that it will
keep being maintained even tho it can be a headache for devs at times.
Thing is, I've read a lot of distros use eudev and avoid the systemd
version as much as possible, even tho eudev still has the same code from
my understanding.  Still, I'd rather stick with what works for me.

Maybe we will know pretty soon what the status of this will be.

Does converting from: sys-fs/eudev
to: sys-fs/udev

is as simple as: emerge -C sys-fs/eudev
emerge sys-fs/udev
Have you read the news item? It's not quite that literal about what to
do, but does imply that should work. However, on 15 Sep there was a
post on the gentoo-dev list with a link to
https://github.com/eudev-project/eudev (see README.md) which says that
there is a new team taking up maintenance of eudev, so it is not
abandoned, and so it is not clear whether eudev will actually be
dropped or not.

i am a little confused about the news 2021-08-19
in the 4.8.26 ebuilds the use flag is +xdg.
with 4.8.26 everything is ok.

4.8.27 does not show me e.g. man-pages correctly, only source, no
format.

i put a file in dir /etc/portage/package.use with:
app-misc/mc xdg
it has no effect

i use temp
USE="xdg" emerge app-misc/mc
it has no effect.

what is wrong?

i'm not against that. in fact, this goes in the
list of the productive things. remember, i said
"not limited to"? i literally stated that my list
of productive things is not exhaustive.

spending time with family is productive, since
it's an opportunity to inspect the situation of
family members to help them become even better
people. this happens implicitly even though
dad/mom doesn't say "hey kids time for annual
performance inspection!".

it's part of us which we inherited from evolution
that actually helps maximise our survival. there
is a reason why we've evolved to like it.

but, worthy to note, not everything we like is
good. e.g. there are bugs in evolution. e.g.
some people enjoy drugs up to a point they become
addicts. this is not inline with survival
maximisation, so we can say this is a
vulnerability in evolution that drug dealers try
to exploit.

rgrds,
ebonzer.

hi. i just want to help a bit by sharing a
thought that i think is useful to the civilisation
of life forms in general:

- new year celebrations are wasteful in
several ways (e.g. waste on needless
  purchases [aka gifts], useless fireworks,
useless trees with socks on them, etc).

- the vacation is nice to allow potential good
use of it. but even this is usually abused
by most people as they end up just wasting
it alongside their money for purely doing
silly things such as purposeless tourism.

- i hope that, one day, humanity won't do such
useless things, and --instead-- we re-direct
  the otherwise-wasted resources into actually
useful things such as (not limited to):

  * contributions to scientific
research.

  * foss projects.

  * ...

  * purchase of scientific books/tools for
smart kids that love science, but live in
situations where their parents are unable
to afford as such to them.

i personally think this last point to be
the best investment in the long-run. most
likely today we lack potentially great
scientists because they simply got wasted
due to lack of funding during their
childhood. likewise today's science
potentially lags centuries behind what it
would've been if we had taken this point
more seriously centuries ago.

it's never too early to start acting better.

Dear Ebenezer,

Some of us would welcome the opportunity to waste time with their
families over Christmas and the New Year, instead of having to spend it
isolating at home following a positive COVID-19 test.

Don't underestimate the therapeutic value of doing nothing with the people
that are important to you.
