If you are unable to update more frequently than that you are going to

Portage, just portage, only portage

Ok, I sledgehammered the new portage into the system...

Here are some highlights from a many hundred killobyte "emerge system"
log...

[ebuild U?? ] sys-kernel/linux-headers-5.3::gentoo [5.0-r1::gentoo]
USE="-headers-only" 106,019 KiB

 I'm still frozen at kernel-4.8 =\

[ebuild?? N ] sys-libs/ncurses-compat-5.9:5::gentoo?? USE="gpm (tinfo)
unicode" ABI_X86="32 (64) (-x32)" 0 KiB
[uninstall ] sys-libs/ncurses-5.9-r101:5::gentoo?? USE="gpm (tinfo)
unicode" ABI_X86="32 (64) (-x32)"
[blocks b?? ] sys-libs/ncurses:5 ("sys-libs/ncurses:5" is blocking
sys-libs/ncurses-compat-5.9)

You only want me to suffer, don't you?

How in god's name do I resolve this without bricking my system???

I mean basically no package on my system has an override that says "just
use printf, damnit", they all make ncurses calls All of them! If I
breathe on ncurses, portage instantly stops working (even BASH stops
working!!) and I'm screwed...

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild U?? ] sys-apps/portage-2.3.76::gentoo [2.3.65::gentoo]
USE="(ipc) native-extensions rsync-verify xattr -build -doc -epydoc
-gentoo-dev (-selinux)" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 python3_6 python3_7
-pypy -python3_5" 1,010 KiB
[blocks B?? ]

Unmerge gentoolkit, then install the later version after portage if
updated.

I've run into this many times, whenever portage asks me to update itself
after a sync I always run `emerge -a portage gentoolkit` to merge them
both so this error doesn't happen.
