I've had the occasional problem where an upgrade is spread across several
packages. Konqueror refused to start during a KDE update because kdelibs
was more recent than kdebase.

emerge xorg-x11 -B
stop X
emerge xorg-x11 -uavk
restart X
downtime for X <1 minute.
