I don't use fastcgi, but have you tested the ulimit settings for the user 
that runs it (ulimit -a)?

The default for my user is:
archie openldap # ulimit -a
core file size(blocks, -c) 0

The webserver runs under the apache user.
How do I set the ulimit on a user
that does not have a proper login?
