Hacking the Climate: Political and Ethical Issues with Geo-Engineering

Elizabeth Chalecki, Visiting Research Fellow, Stimson Center

Dr. Elizabeth Chalecki will discuss the scientific principles, political
and economic issues, and ethical concerns surrounding the climate-altering
technologies we know as geo-engineering. From blocking sunlight to removing
carbon from the air, these technologies offer the potential to stem the
worst effects of anthropogenic climate change. However, they each come with
significant and sometimes unanticipated costs, and they may be
irreversible. What sorts of questions to we need to ask ourselves now
before we let this genie out of the bottle?
