for the records, it's not what I was suggesting but I am glad it
worked out anyway.

If I understood correctly, you are now using an ImagePyramid rather
tha a single GeoTiff, right?

Ciao Pedro,
I would go with a single bigtiff with proper tiling, overvies and compression.

You can use the gdal utils to do the preprocessing. There is plenty of
info around on how to do that,
