CHANGE (Certificate on Humans and the Global Environment) Graduate =20
Training Program

at the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, University of =20
Wisconsin, Madison

A NEW GRADUATE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM SUPPORTED BY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE =20
FOUNDATION

University of Wisconsin faculty working on issues of vulnerability =20
and sustainability of the global environment were recently awarded an =20=

IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education, Research, and Training) grant =20
from the National Science Foundation. The grant will provide two =20
years of support to a small number of exceptional Ph.D. students and =20
will establish a new graduate Certificate on Humans and the Global =20
Environment (CHANGE). The CHANGE program involves faculty members in =20
departments ranging across atmospheric and oceanic sciences, ecology, =20=

environmental studies, veterinary medicine to sociology.

Features of the CHANGE-IGERT

=95 Provides a two year stipend, tuition, and health insurance for 3-4 =20=

CHANGE Fellows each year. CHANGE Fellows are students who have been =20
admitted to a UW-Madison Ph.D. program and have separately applied to =20=

receive IGERT support. View our CHANGE Fellows page for more =20
information on these opportunities. Note: Only U.S. Citizens or =20
Permanent Residents can be funded as CHANGE Fellows.

=95 Incorporates a graduate certificate Certificate on Humans and the =20=

Global Environment (CHANGE) that can be added to any graduate degree =20
in an environmentally related discipline. For more information, view =20
the Certificate on Humans and the Global Environment web page.

=95 Trains participating students to work more effectively across =20
disciplinary boundaries by providing classes, training, research, and =20=

teaching opportunities that encourage collaboration and joint problem =20=

solving.

=95 Promotes research that focuses on understanding the links between =20=

human and non-human elements in natural systems so that =20
vulnerabilities can be identified and sustainable solutions can be =20
developed and promoted. Current themes include:

- Systems Analysis of Global Environmental Processes and Dynamics

- Globalization and Global Environmental Change: Knowledge, =20
Institutions and Governance

- Textures of Place: Geography, History, Ecology, and Politics

- Transdisciplinary Approaches to Pedagogy, Management, and =20
Organization in Global Environment Studies

=95 Builds a community of scholars across the UW-Madison campus and =20
beyond whose research focuses on issues of environmental =20
sustainability on a wide variety of spatial and temporal scales. =20
Explore our core faculty web page for more information on the =20
specific research interests of IGERT affiliated faculty.
