GitHead questions from the uninitiated

In the last week or so, I've been patching get_iplayer using GitHeadWin to make sure I'm using the latest version. I presume GitHead is a way of advising interim patches prior to issuing an official update? But I'm puzzled, how do we know when this has been updated? It not like some file list
