Any idea what I could do to narrow down the problem?
It seems to be related to the fact that STDOUT is used, as whenever I
record to a file there is no problem.
Also when using 'debug mode' the streams plays until the end, although
very very slow.

You're in Singapore. BBC iPlayer content is not generally available
in Singapore.

I think it will be difficult to diagnose for anyone without your
particular media player machine and UK proxy setup. It's worth noting
that mplayer is not
