Re: Problems downloading Winter Olympics
Re. file sizes doubling. In my expereince some are and many aren't. I can't quite get a handle on why. I too have seen 1.5 hour films go to 5.5GB where before I would expect 2.5 - 3. Yet one episode of Killing Eve from the last series yields the info below for the full HD and the 1280x720 versions. Hardly an increase in file size, but then the compression is different and may or may not suit the type of scenes within the episode I guess. Compression is a bit of a mystery to me... I've always been impressed by the quality of the 1280 x 720 on our 4K UHD screen and while the quality is subjectively better in certain areas with the Full HD, it's not something I'd do every time if it was doubling the storage requirement. To be honest I find that better sound has more impact on the "watchability"/enjoyment of a lot of programs than the video. We stream a lot these days from Netflix/Disney+/Prime... which is going to be a lot more compressed than the video in these files but the Atmos or DTS audio through the surround speakers and sub. on the streamed content make such an impact, which (even with all the processing the audio system can throw at it) the iplayer files never match. If anyone's wondering from the info, I store most things in .TS unless I'm ripping my DVD's/BluRays mainly because that's what all the off air recordings from whenever were recorded in. Must admit I'm no longer sure if this is the best way to do this with iplayer files but hey. The change in video quality available is described on this page for version 3.29. https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/release320to329#release329 I've seen a doubling in file sizes to approx 4GB per hour when selecting fhd video quality Whether it is true full HD or not, I'm not sure, but the files seem to report they are 1080p On Sun, 6 Mar 2022 at 17:43, MacFH - C E Macfarlane - News wrote: > > On 06/03/2022 02:25, MacFH - C E Macfarlane - News wrote: > > > > On 05/03/2022 21:00, Paul Phillips wrote: > >> > >> Where you downloading in HD or Full HD (1080) ? > >>> > >>> FWIW, I downloaded all the above using the following command ... > >>> > >>> perl \get_iplayer.pl --profile-dir= --type tv > >>> --tvmode hlshd, dvfhd, hvfhd, dvfsd, hvfsd, dvfxsd, hvfxsd --pid > >>> --file-prefix "" -g > >>> > >>> ... noting that at one time my mode list was giving warning messages, > >>> though still working, but that I think this is a corrected version that > >>> did not. > > > > The answer to your question is in the command-line above.
