Believe me, X11 didn't freeze. What you observed most probably was GIMp dying while it has the pointer grabbed. It is very much related since it will limit the amount of memory allocated to render text. I am reading the ones you mentioned now: 118356 talks about the problem I faced, and asks, like I did, for a work around. But the deep cause seems to be 85103 nonetheless.
