It looks like these are the names it sets on the layers it creates in
the image. If they are only temporary they probably don't need to be
translatable (or named).
AFAIK, preseving layers is optional in those (and some other) scripts.

will now be happening in GEGL (www.gegl.org) which is used by GIMP.
There always are filters to be ported to GEGL operations, new GEGL
operations to write, existing operations to be ported to use OpenCL
for hardware acceleration etc.
