Shame on me! I did not discover this menu entry until now! However, the GIMP
help is rather terse, and tells nothing about the  Color Erase, Erase, and
Anti Erase blending modes.

I just discovered this new entry in the Edit menu, as well as the three new
fading modes with "erase" in their name. It's seem interesting, but is there
somewhere explanations about the purpose and working of this feature?

Mitch has just made a commit to HEAD that imho is important
enough to justify a message to this list, on the basis of how
commonly the equivalent feature is used in PhotoShop.  From
the ChangeLog:

2006-10-21  Michael Natterer  <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Added "Edit -> Fade" which allows to modify the paint mode and
opacity of the last drawable operation (fill, plugins etc.).
Started from a patch by Bill Skaggs. Fixes bug #170707.
