Most of the toolbox actions fortunately DO have
shortcut keys. That's one useful feature that I use all the time. On the
downside though, I am not sure if those are documented anywhere. I
haven't
seen the gimp-cheat-sheet postscript recently, since it hasn't been
updated
from back in '98, but that mostly lists Ctrl+whatever shortcuts and
mouse
actions, not listing the key bindings for the toolbox. I found most of my
toolbox keys by just pressing random ones and seeing what happens.
Here's a suggestion: read the GUM, Gimp User Manual, at manual.gimp.org.
It will give you a list of ALL default keybindings.
And all tools can be selected through the Image menu (you know:
right-clicking in an image). They are, as you said, "easily customizable by
pressing the desired key combo while an item is selected".
Now, keep a little quieter, and let the gimp team finish releasing 1.2.

Subject: Re: [lasm] Using the menu + "safe pointer"
- one or more mouse clicks to make sure the current
mouse pointer is safe, i.e. it is not the left over fill bucket
pointer that I have just used a few seconds ago; if it is I need a
few more mouse clicks to find the main toolbox, then
click on some safe pointer such as box selection.
I could be wrong and this key could be "customizable" too, but in my
experience, hitting the "r" key while inside an image changes your current
tool to "rectangular select" which I find to be the least "damaging" if
you
accidentally click somewhere.
