I have gotten it to work with. As a matter of fact, gimp-perl is being
developed with perl5.6.
However, the current 5.6.0 release have a lot of bugs. If you experience
problems with error-reporting in your own scripts then you either have to
upgrade or to downgrade. Most everything else should work with vanilla
5.6.
