One problem might be calling it "golden". Try
(default-gradient Golden)
At least on my system the gradient names are mostly capitalized.

I'm an absolute beginner using GIMP 1.2.2
How can I change the default gradient?
I added the following line to the file: /home/gianni/.gimp-1.2/gimprc
(default-gradient golden)
But it didn't work :-(
What's wrong?
