Ok, I want to make sure that I've asked my question clear enough before I
decide that you guys have blown me away with your technological knowledge. I'm
shooting in RAW and so I'm opening up a RAW file with UFRaw because without
opening the file first with UFRaw, I can't get it into into Gimp for Post
Processing. I hope I'm right so far. Well, after opening the RAW file in UFRaw
and whether I perforn any adjustments or not in UFRaw, if I hit OK to send it
to Gimp isn't it still a RAW file when it's in GIMP or has UFRaw converted it
to a jpg automatically and that is why the image looks crappy in GIMP,
 particulairly when zoomed in on?

Well you would need to Sharpen the RAW image, JPG's are normally
sharpened in camera but not so with RAW. In fact even most JPG images
could benefit from some sharpening.

Cheers
George

Also, why should the user have to dismount the volume at all? Why would he
need to care about such things?

Because the hardware is poorly designed. There is no way for the
computer to lock the device so it can't be removed until it is safe.
And yes, the user does have to care about it even in Windows, try
writing a large file to the device and then immediately yank it out, fun

FUD your conclusion is only valid for yourself and not others so your
statement is false. You can't speak for me and I don't agree with you
so... If you can provide hard data that backs this up with numbers well
that might be a different story but it would have to be global figures.

Look David, I'm a GIMP user and I don't appreciate questions and answers
on this this that do not directly relate to GIMP. Imagine a new user
hearing a solution to their question answered in a Photoshop way and
then going to the GIMP and finding out it doesn't work.

Please do not confuse these two DIFFERENT projects. As others have said
if you want Gimpshop support, start your own list. This list is about
GIMP, it's what the list owners meant when they created it, leave it at
that.

First off, what's all this us you're talking about?
Being on this, and countless other lists of various software products, I
have gotten accustomed to the fact that topics will come up again and
again and again despite being discussed to death in the archives. it's
happened with this, it will happen with other topics. Throwing an
electronic version of a hissy fit isn't going to help. So you can kill
file it or ignore it and move on.

Took me exactly 5 seconds to search gimp name change in Google and
guess what I found? And I can't kill file it because I get the mail
list in an archive, which would mean I have to kill the rest of the
messages.

[Gimp-user] Wow Linux Journal not very enamoured with GIMP.

2007-06-20 Thread George Farris
The latest Linux Journal sure doesn't have much good to say about GIMP
(Deep Images). Talks about it being a dinosaur and being left behind by
the likes of Cinepaint, Krita and Pixel. Sure hope there isn't a GIMP
2.6 but rather it moves to GIMP 3.0 based on GEGL with a UI revamp.

I kind of like the GIMP but I do agree with some of the things said
about it in the article.

Most probably because there is a way to do that:

On Fri, 2006-22-12 at 21:11 -0800, I really do think we need to find a
better, less offensive name for GIMP,
and the sooner the better, so that we can put energy into supporting it,
and doing whatever we can to extend it's use instead of periodically having
  this disagreement.

Yes *points at best post in thread*

OK, look here is the real fact, bar none. Only the person who utters a
phrase, let me say that again THE PERSON WHO UTTERS A PHRASE in a
derogatory manor is the real issue here. Words mean nothing until hey
are said in a derogatory manor.

GIMP means nothing to anyone until the person saying it gives it
meaning. We mean it to be a graphics program. If you went to a
handicapped person and showed them the GIMP and explained what it was
they would think nothing of it, unless they were used to using the word
in a derogatory manor themselves, shouting it out at other people.
These people are not worth changing the name for to put it bluntly.

Cheers
