Not sure that's the case, you'll probably need a 

-march=pentium-pro

in your CFLAGS.
(maybe without the hyphen - man gcc should tell you what it accepts.)

Although most modern chips are optimized to run i386 code well,
you may find some programs work better on PPRo

 if you decide to install from rpm then 
 I think you will want to get the i586 or i686
 although i386 should work.
