Use Hugin to merge the images in a smart way. IMO there is no reason
to use GIMP to build the texture (except perhaps tiny cosmetic
touchups of the result of Hugin)

From the tutorialo/article:

There are no magic formulas for this operation, just painstaking
cutting, assembling, fitting and filling in missing pieces, erasing
shadows, toning down the hair, until we get a usable texture.

Yes with the resynthesizer plugin.

(or with hugin but, if only for that hugin may be a overkill )
