first it has to be seamless or it looks bad.
but you should be able to save as .pat into the gimp pattern directory
and then load it up from there to use as fill.
i'm not exactly sure what you need to know.

Get a newer version.  Although developer versions, they are still pretty
much stable and the only way to get the things included in grokking.

Just go into the go into the image menu, then Script-fu, decor, add
bevel.  i think that does what you want although i dont recall running
it on an image. but you could at least generate your bumpmap that way.
i also remember seeing a tutorial somewhere but i dont remember where
for making cool buttons.  check www.linuxartist.org for the tutorial
links and see what you can find.

ive read all the stuff on png support in web browsers.  it sucks. every
single browser out there has some kind of error.  so basically, dont use
pngs.

can you just copy it and paste it into a canvas twice as wide, paste
again, flip horizontal, and there you go.
