Have downloaded GIMP for windows but own up to 
being a novice atthis kind of thing!
Very grateful if someone could advise me how to 
change the image size in pixels of around 40,000 jpg pictures in one or a few 
batches? Using Windows98.

I would say use this instead

Maybe someone else will have better advice for using gimp.

Seeing as you have downloaded the Windows port of 
GIMP, you might find this page helpful :

It has a couple of mailing lists specifically for 
GIMP for Windows.
