In general, mixing different gtk-library versions even in differing
prefixes does not work reliably, especially when later installing
additional plug-ins for gimp, for example.
Problems arise almost always when you have your libtiff (perl, libjpeg,
libpng...) in the same prefix (e.g. /usr/local) as the version of gtk you
do NOt want to link against.

You might try to put the correct gkt-config-script first in your path.

It is, if you know what you are doing. It is easy if you do not install
development links (e.g. the .so link, the static library and the includes)
for the older version.
