Just in case someone on this list uses Inkscape 0.91 r13725 on windows x64.

You may be getting black backgrounds or black frames in your prints when the 
background should be white. This is a known bug in this version of Inkscape. 
There are two workarounds:

1. In document preferences set your background colour to white, NOT transparent.
2. Put a white rectangle that covers the whole page on your base layer 
underneath your image.

This bug has been fixed in Inkscape v 0.92 but I just found out about it today 
after encountering it—again—a few days ago.
