[Gimp-user] Post GIMP File Management, Organizing Viewing/Simpler Alternatives Options PLEASE READ HELP!!! How Make .JPG Files More Like Tiles or Icons. Once Moved They Stay Set

2013-04-11 Thread FriendlyBeginner
Hello Everyone,

Please Help Me! I am perplexed hungry for ideas. I have thousands of 3x5 inch
index cards, all hand written cards. And I have learned how to use GIMP to scan
4 cards at a time, crop, guillotine the 4 cards to make 4 seperate .JPG files,
and then import to my PC (XP).

The cards will (I guess) be numbered like 001.jpg, 002.jpg like that. BUT this
current batch of cards are basically just things to do index cards, so I will
likely have 3 folders labeled by priority 1, 2, 3And inside these folders
are all my .JPG files depending on the priority of each things to do card.

And all these thousands of cards will be dragged and dropped or otherwise be
constantly moved and/or deleted by me constantly from folder to folder, keep in
mind each of these .JPG files is labeled/numbered.

So when I move them from one folder to another, there is labeling/numbering
conflicts, and the order and positioning will be lost.

What I was hoping for was some sort of a program/file manager whereby I can
treat the .JPG Files more like tiles or desktop icons, once moved they are
just there and do not move unless I move them and they do not get automatically
moved by my PC based on file name/number, yet still be able to move and/or
delete them from folder to folder without conflict.

I really need some thinking outside of the box options/ideas. Any alternative
file folder experts out there? Any file management/organizing programs out
there? Please Help!

 Thank You,

 FriendlyBeginner

Use a program like shotwell and tag each file with its file name. Then
no matter where it is you can retrieve it from the tag.

The tag might also be useful for further identification of the cards

[Gimp-user] GIMP Site Redesign

2013-04-11 Thread Kasim Ahmic
Over at the Web List I've posted this redesign that I made from Mike Finch's
mockup.

http://kasimahmic.koding.com/works/GIMP/

It seemed to get very high praise and acceptance from the users in the list.
Overall, I think the homepage is done and I just wanted to ask more users about
their opinion on it as well as figure out what I have to do next in terms of
getting the redesign on the official GIMP site (assuming the developers like it
as well).

A few things to note:

 - Currently, it is only the homepage
 - We MIGHT be redesigning the entire GIMP website. No idea as of yet.
 - The slideshow images will be changed soon.
 - The background of the header might change as well.
 - We will not use the current text that we have on the body (ex. Professional
Level Filters). This was discussed on the Web List.

So tell me what you guys think of it so far! Any and all positive as well as
negative feedback is welcome and much appreciated. It'll really help me make
this into something that everyone can enjoy!

I'm not a huge fan of the black background. Overall, I do like the
design though.

One thing is missing: mobile-friendly layouts. The current site is
not fantastic at mobile size, but it's more usuable than your demo.
Apologies if you were already planning to take care of this.

As for HTML5, I've seen my fill of browser-specific issues with HTML
4.0 and XHTML. Avoid the stuff that's still in churn (eg, canvas tag
the last time I checked), and HTML5 is fine IMO, and a lot more fun to
work with.

Unless the overlap setting can be simulated/emulated using a second layer,
there is currently no way to set overlap. It would require a new PDB call
that takes the extra parameter or adding a context setting to allow overlap
to be set.

Thanks Steve

You mean this tool with polygon like looking icon?
I'll try it again... on normal installation (on gimp portable it
crashes everytime).

I've already tried some tools from filtersdistort menu in gimp 2.6 -
they are effective to remove fat or similar things. But they lack
precision, just as You said.

I need such tool for slightly different purpose:
I have photos of my paintings. Unfortunately some of them are not flat
- paintings are bent or twisted a little. Perspective tool is not
enough - it solve troubles with angle between lens and canvas, but
can't help with bent watercolor.
Photographing this paintings after framing is just too difficult. So i
have to digitally flatten them for photography.

I see what edges are bent on photo, so i need to transform it in the
opposite direction without loosing any proportions on the image.
That's why this wrap tool in Photoshop give me some hope ... but i
really prefer doing my job with Gimp.

Maybe there is a technique for making bent paintings flat on
photograpy, only i'm not aware how to do it?

Thanks again

You could try the curve bend between paths script
http://registry.gimp.org/node/19214 which was created to correct distortion
from scanning books. It could work (but not having seen the source images
in question, I can't guarantee it...)

If I understand correctly -- that in the long run it is the information
ON the cards that you want to preserve, not necessarily images of the
cards themselves, then it seems to me that you should be using a
database that can either _contain_ images or at least display images
referenced by filenames in the database, as well as textual/data content.

In such a database, every card would be referenced by some unique
filename/number; it really does not matter much what that
filename/number is. The card would be viewable either as an independent
image by whatever methods, but more importantly, from withing the
database's user interface.

The data records in the database would be structured to _eventually_
replace the cards/images. Over time, you could type in the data from
the cards (images) into the database (while being able to see both at
the same time on screen). When the data is fully entered, then you can
sort and organize it any thousand ways you want and you will always have
immediate access to the image (if still needed).

After first trials this script seem to do more less what i expected :)
Now i'll have to spend some time with mastering path tool, and Your
script combined with perspective tool probably will do the job.

Not sure if the script is aware which path was drawn first. Does it
matter whether i draw top or bottom path first?
