The most obvious is pressing the TAB key. Perhaps you accidently pressed it and so they disappeared. They also return with the TAB key. If this doesn't help and it turns out to be a bug, please upgrade to the latest version, currently GIMP 2.8.6. Kind regards, Sven DUDE!!! That did it! You

This just creeped up again. I can add nodes between certain node pairs, but not others. I made this path by joining two paths, then was going back to round the corners. Happens with guides on or off and at any zoom level. Here is a small vid of it.
