The image seems to be that of a person. Are you trying to remove that
person? In other words, you only want the background? I am not sure I
understand what you are trying to do.

Re: [Gimp-user] Why is lettering not clearer?

2017-08-07 Thread Rick Strong
It may be my eye, but the word Home looks to be a tiny bit larger than the
word Hired. Is the type the same size? Try making Hired 1 pt bigger.

You might also try widening the kerning (spacing) between the letters in
HIRED. There are a lot of close together verticals in HIRED compared to
Home.

HIRED is all Caps while Home is U/lc (Upper and lower case). Should they
not be the same?

Try also making small pixel words at 600 to 1200 dpi.

Good luck.

Subject: [Gimp-user] Why is lettering not clearer?

Hi,

I created a logo and uploaded to a web page, as you can see by the attached
image "HIRED", the lettering/text doesn't look clear. It is Arial 11 on a
transparent background.
Gimp 2.8

The link to the home page "Home" is attached. it is not part of the logo,
but

looks much clearer on the web page.

Is there something I can do to help make the logo text sharper/clearer?

Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, there definitely is some intention to fix GIMP for Hi-DPI displays.

Not a guess this time.

The size and weight of the font is too small. By default Gimp applies
anti-aliasing, hence those semi-transparent pixels. Because of the small size
they dominate.

You can turn off anti-aliasing for text in the tool options and get the results
shown. Not wonderful but then one is 7 pixels high and the other 9 (with lower
case smaller).

The typeface (font) also makes a difference, some will look even worse, Arial
for example.

Looking at it again, since you are putting these on a webpage, What format are
you using for the upload?

It might not be Gimp, it might be the website applying the anti-aliasing.

Yes, not easy for a beginner, Gimp has a steep learning curve.

One thing I suggest is, If you still have traditional Gimp three windows is
enable single window mode.

Gimp menu Windows -> Single Window Mode, then we are on the same basis.

Otherwise it is click in that bar top of the layers dialogue and move the
slider.

edit: Hate this mailing list format.

If you plan on using the final image on say a web page.

You will not eventually need the bottom white layer, delete that as required.

Save your work as a Gimp xcf file which preserves all/any layers and settings.

When complete, Export the image as a .png file which flattens to a single layer
but importantly preserves the transparency .

Other formats will lose transparency.

Open your image in Gimp

1. Give the image transparency, called an alpha channel, Layer menu ->
Transparency -> Add Alpha Channel (if greyed-out it already exists)

2. Add a new layer, Layer -> New Layer Fill it with white (start off with white,
experiment later with different colours/patterns)

3. Move your photo over that, easiest way, use the little arrows or
click-n-drag.

4. With the photo layer **active**, ie. click on it in the layers dialogue (it
will 'highlight'), move the **opacity** slider to a value that suits you.

5. For text, click on the text tool, click on the canvas, a text layer is
created above the active layer.

I am new to GIMP. Actually, new to any photo manipulating program. I am trying
to make a photo transparent--the entire photo, that is, not just the background.
I'm confused and keep finding instructions for fading (which is not what I want)
or instructions for removing background. Maybe I'm using the wrong terminology,
I don't know. I plan on using the photo as a backdrop for text. Any help would

[Gimp-user] resynthesizer problems

2017-08-07 Thread Dasa_108
Hi,

I 'm new to GIMP and I'm getting some trouble with the resynthesizer tool. My
end goal is to remove the subject of this image. I have used resynthesizer to
remove objects that lies on a single color background. This image, however, lies
on a background with multiple colors and I'm having lots of difficulties
removing the object. Please, any assistance would most definitely be
appreciated. I've attached the image to this message.

I also have a Surface Pro 4 but the issue is only with GIMP, not with PS or any
other application. GIMPs UI is so zoomed in that I can barely make out the text,
much less hover over anything an click. I also tried the above "solution" but
that definitely wasn't a fix for me. The large icons are a plus but this is
pretty far from user friendly. The current Linux build has no issues and this
issue actually does persist outside of the Surface and on my other Windows 10
PC. Is there any intention on making this program usable for Windows?
