Thanks Judah, what you suggest ok, but without the text preferences panel in the
left panel, it's not possible to change the text away from the default size,
font, colour etc...

There was a huge change between 2.6 and 2.8. Did you make sure that you are
reading current tutorial? Have you checked the documentation?
