This technique is exposure-blending or tone-blending
1. Open image
2. Duplicate layer (We'll be working on the duplicate, in case of flubs)
3. Select bottom layer
4. New Layer - White (since you want a white background). This will now be the
middle layer.
5. Make only the top layer visible (click on the eyeball symbol in front of the

Except for alignment (which you can do yourself (fun, fun, fun!) or with Hugin)
one such workflow that I have been using (not sure where I read it) is as
follows:
Align layers (suggest eyeballing the images to see which image seems to be in
the middle,
and then aligning the two others to it;

I use GIMP 2.8.16 on Lubuntu 16.04 LTS. (No doubt when 16.10 is available and I
install it, I will have 2.8.18 available)
I ALSO use Dark Refraction's nightly builds 2.9.x versions for Windows, used
through WINE,
