Is there some way to correct this fault and restore Sans as the actual font? That should be pretty easy - just make sure to save your Tool Options so they load that way the next time you start GIMP. If you are using GIMP on the Windows platform, then that was a known problem with some of the recent installers (for the technically inclined: an absolute path in the fontconfig configuration, where a relative suffices).
