Per the cited web page:

"Some images from this web site can be copied freely and used in
other pages. This includes the buttons shown above and the images of
Wilber shown below."

This language does not cover use in print media.

Since your employers demand documentation, you may have to contact
Wilbur's creator, Tuomas Kuosmanen (TigerT).  I am sure he won't
mind if you use it as described above.  Try tig...@gimp.org and/or
tig...@nettilinja.fi

[Gimp-user] Using Wilber Image

Hello,

I am writing a class for a commercial curriculum site, and was wondering 
whether or not I may use images of Wilber in my writing?  The director of the 
site wants me to obtain official permission before using them.  If that cannot 
be given here, do you know where I could ask for it?

I don't think it's a problem. To be clear, you're using the images as
indicators/illustrations of or about GIMP?
