Re: [Gimp-user] HDR image generation

2016-10-31 Thread scott092707

Except for alignment (which you can do yourself (fun, fun, fun!) or with Hugin)
one such workflow that I have been using (not sure where I read it) is as
follows:

Align layers (suggest eyeballing the images to see which image seems to be in
the middle,
and then aligning the two others to it; this eliminates one image from needing
to be aligned,
and minimizes the distance the others need to go to reach alignment... [other
manual
alignment tips available upon request {although be warned: one of them is "Bang
head against wall." !}])

Layer stack (assuming 3 images):

brightest image, with added layer mask of inverted greyscale copy of layer
darkest image, with added layer mask of [non-inverted] greyscale copy of layer
middle image

one then, if desired, selects each of the layer masks, and uses
colors->curves[or ->levels] to
alter each layer's contribution to the whole.
If I remember correctly, if one uses more than three images, one should use an
inverted
greyscale copy of layer for each image that is brighter than the middle image.

After fiddling with the layer masks, one can then "layer from visible" and then
colors->curves
or ->levels on this resultant image, as it will be a bit lacking in contrast.

Subject: [Gimp-user] HDR image generation

Would someone please be so kind to share his/her favourite work flow to
generate an HDR image out of a sequence of 3 or 5 images
taken with exposure bracketing.
It should be possible to align/register the images since I want to
apply it to images taken without a tripod - my camera
takes only about 0.3 seconds for 5 shots.

I'd like to use open source software on Linux only.
I have installed Gimp (GIT), G'MIC(GIT), hugin and enfuse/enblend.

Many thanks for sharing your setup,
Helmut

Actually, a slightly updated version can also be found here:

https://pixls.us/articles/hdr-photography-with-free-software-luminancehdr/

In short: LuminanceHDR to align, create the HDR, and tonemap down to LDR.

I had written about this using LuminanceHDR a few years ago. The workflow
hasn't changed:
