Greetings again,

UPDATE: Seems GIMP just resumed functioning as if nothing happened. The
'flickering' pointer is no longer.

Thanks for listening. Please disregard my need for support.

Cheers,

Subject: Problem with GIMP Tool

Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Greetings,

Am using GIMP 2.10.22 and using a Desktop PC, Windows 10 Home, 64-bit OS.

Got this problem with a using the Clone Tool- the pointer started ‘flickering’.

And it only seems to do that when I move the pointer.

Selecting an area to Clone and applying this to your image is difficult to do
now.

Other tools like the Eraser, Pencil, Paintbrush, Smudge, etc. are also affected.

It only started today and I’ve tried:

  1. Resetting the tool settings to default
  2. Restarting my PC
  3. Uninstalling and re-installing GIMP

Nothing seems to work.

Attached a short video to show you the problem.

Hope you are able to fix this. Thank you.

Victor.

Years ago I used Irfanview as an image file manager on a Windows XP
system with waaay to many images to keep track of otherwise, and it
worked very well. Set the GIMP as default "editor" in Irfanview and
viola, instant easy access for editing. Irfanview most likely remains
far superior to Microsoft's default image viewer.

I have always found the default behavior of Windows Explorer -
displaying thumbnails of image files instead of file type icons - very
annoying. Opening a directory with a few hundred image files is like
stepping in glue - sit and wait while all those previews render, then
you can open the subdirectory you were headed for, wait for previews to
render there, etc. This may have improved in later versions, or maybe
not.

Windows Explorer used to save all those thumbnails as files, creating
massive clutter in the file system; I wonder if the mystery .lnk files
mentioned above may have something to do with that process. I have
found the "windows classic" User Interface option with image previews
turned off wy cleaner, faster, and easier to use than the various
"latest and greatest" default User Experience configurations.

Using gimp 2.8 on the latest incarnation of Windows 10, I tried to use
the search feature in "File|Open."

1. I couldn't specify a path to search.

2. I got this error message: The program was not able to create a
connection to the indexer daemon. Please make sure it is running.

My Windows indexing service is running. Does the gimp have it's own
indexer daemon? Could the *.gif.lnk file point to an entry in the index?

My preferred way to open a graphic is to use windows explorer to browse
to the file, right click and select "open with." gimp should be on the
list but if it isn't there are prompts to add it.

Why the .lnk files exist at all is a mystery to me; these are created
when one makes a "shortcut" pointing to a file that is (usually) located
in another directory. Apparently Windows 10 is doing this automatically
for some reason? If so there may be a way to disable it, then those
.lnk files won't present any more problems - although the existing ones
will remain.

I had never used the GIMP's file search tool before, but when I just
tried it out I noticed that the user selects which directory to search
in; since there's no reason for those .lnk files to exist, maybe more
than one of them is created in more than one directory, and maybe she is
looking in the wrong directory. If she could create a directory just
for files she is working on, and search in only that directory, that
might be a solution.

I'm not sure about Windows 10, but "find as you type" has never worked
in previous versions of Windows Explorer; from Windows 98 though Windows
XP, it always searched only for the last letter typed, by looking at the
first letters of the file names in the directories. If that /has/ been
fixed in Windows 10, she could open the directory where the file she
wants to open lives, type its name until it is automagically selected,
then drag and drop it to the GIMP canvas or toolbox to open it. Or
right click and "open with" the GIMP.

The actual file search tool in Windows Explorer does work (as far as I
know, at least it used to), so she could use that to find the files she
wants, and drag and drop them to the GIMP. Or, right-click the file
icon or thumbnail, and select open with > GIMP from the drop down menu.

Finding a file that has "gone missing" after being worked on the
previous day might be solved by doing File > Open > Recent in the GIMP.

It's very frustrating as it interferes with pretty much everything I try

I had a problem with the mouse cursor flickering, although more rapidly
than you report. This has just been cured by an update to my graphics
driver. Maybe your problem is similar. You could try a different version of
your driver?

Hi Dylan,

you could use GIMP 2.8.10. It's without the need of XQuartz,
so this could solve this problem.

Kind regards,

For users of the Text facility, there is a handy tutorial:

Thanks! I needed some experimenting to get used to the new facility but
it sure looks handy and efficient. It still needs some work, though.

Since we now have three ways to control text properties there's a risk
of confusing descriptions. For example, the text options panel has
Adjust line spacing while the tool box overlay has Change baseline of
selected font. The options panel has Adjust letter spacing while the
tool box overlay has Change kerning of selected text. The text editor
seems to be consistent with the tool box overlay.

Several features do not seem to function properly. In particular, the
text editor seems to behave strange. See e.g.
http://www.squirrel.nl/pub/xfer/uploads/3CAk4t63w4ZFPF_047osONJA.png

In the text options, the kerning is adjusted with +10. This can be seen
on the canvas. The second word the has had the kerning changed back to
0.

In the text editor, the text is not shown with +10 kerning and,
surprise, the second word the is not unkerned, but lowered.

Changing the baseline using the semi-transparent tool box does not have
any effect, neither does changing the baseline in the text editor.
Changing it in the 'classical' tool options dialog does work.

When the text editor is shown, the on-cavas editing doesn't work
anymore.

In the text editor, when you want to change e.g. the font size of a
piece of text, strange things happen. For example, select the word
quick and then go to the font size field and use the mouse wheel. The
selection is lost and although the font size (number) changes, no text
is affected.

I consider these first release inconveniences that beyond doubt will
get fixed soon.

All by all the new text features are promising.

Done.

They work fine here, but you have to have selected some text on the

I cannot select text when the editor is active. I have to close the

Using Gimp 2.6 on a Mandriva system. I have happily been using a
combination of Imagemagick's 'Convert' and Gimp to write annotation at
the foot of certain directories of .jpg images:

(1) Place a white panel at the foot of each image:

   -
   for img in *.jpg
do convert $img -gravity South -background White -splice 0x50 $img

(2) Take each image into Gimp (2.6), select Text, click on the white

A very simple, smooth, and effective solution.

Now, however, I am working on Mageia-2 (Beta3), which provides Gimp
2.7.4, and - guess what - the Text function now works differently and
(for my purpose) more clumsily, tripling the effort needed to write the

With 2.6, selecting Text and clicking on the white panel brought up a
text-entry window, such that any text entered also appeared in a dynamic

However, with 2.7.4, the text-entry window is much smaller, with no
apparent adjustment control, and any text entered does *not* appear in
the white panel.
(But I did discover that one could cut-paste from one to the other,

So the previously simple process has become a messy slog.

Have I misssed some setting/adjustment in the new Text function?

(Alternatively, could anyone recommend a package that could perform the
function of writing text into these image panels, please?)
