File/Open like in most software... or double click in your file explorer 
if the explorer setup allows. If this is already "not intuitively quick 
and easy", wait for the rest :)

Also dragging and dropping an image onto the application (usually).

Maybe there is a more "intuitive" way other than 'File -> Open', but I've
yet to see it.
