i solicited the gimp forum because I thought that gimp might open the .jp2
files, but we are indeed digressing from the purpose of this forum. my
tablet does not have an external keyboard and the touchpad keyboard lacks
many keys found on a physical keyboard - ESC is absent in particular. i
also don't have a physical mouse. as you say, this discussion has
progressed well beyond the purpose of this forum so i will make do with
your helpful suggestion that i should not be using "slideshow." Thank you
for your help. however, i will tell you that i have invoked 'add all' and i
do see the content of the first few pages *only* - and only in full screen
- by tapping the screen.

what do you mean by 'official build' - i installed the gimp 2.8 on windows
10 from the official gimp site five days ago. although several reviews
implied that 2.8 does have .jp2 capability i see no tangible manifestation
of such.

I presume you are asking me about "official build". Michael can tell
you more about it.

It's the build provided by GIMP maintainers. If that build does not
include jp2 support, you'll have to ask Michael.

My builds obtained from my website have jp2 support built in.

It does that if JPEG-2000 support is compiled in. This is not

A slideshow does not seem to be the way to do it. There is no guarantee
that you will have finished reading the page before the next image appears.

Simply open the first "page" (or the page you are up to) of the book as
a single image in Irfanview. Not as a slideshow. Then when you have read
the page there should be left/right arrows on a toolbar. Or, use
left/right arrows on the keyboard.

Show us a screen shot when you open that first image.

irfanview is indeed lauded for being plenary but i haven't had success with
it: irfanview's toolbar should as you say contain a “proceed to the
successor page” button but i don't see it - i only see a “progress to the
next *file* ” button. also, the toolbar appears only in one or two views -
the default view is full screen which does present the toolbar. and iv is
most unfriendly to touchpad keyboards. thus, iv has thus far been of no use
to me although it was one of the first that i tried - that's why i'm still
searching. (btw, many softwares - including Windows! and Google's Gmail-
are inconsiderate of touchpad keyboards.)

I don't understand your distinction between successor "page" and "file".
You say your "book" consists of many images, one per page. As far as
image editors/viewers are concerned, an image is a file (ignoring
complications like layers).

i have not encountered anything native to windows 10 that opens .jp2;
that's why i'm trying so many third-party softwares - the latest being
http://www.fastone.org  .. and this latest too does not seem like it's
friendly to a tablet with touchpad keyboard or else i don't understand how
to work it: it's requiring an immense time to create thumbnails for the 517
.jp2 pages; and i see no way to use its slideshow feature without first

An image viewer is something you use to view a lot of images --
what you're trying to do with this book. (Though why anyone would
distribute a book in as a bunch of jp2 images is beyond me.)

An image converter sounds like something that converts from one
format to the other. For instance, if you used ImageMagick to
convert all those jp2 files to JPEG or PNG.

GIMP is an image editor, for creating new images or making changes
to existing ones. It's cumbersome to use for viewing a long sequence
of images one after the other because that's not what it was
designed for. If you wanted to take a few of those images and change
the color of the pages, or add drop shadows on the text and flowers
around the border, GIMP would be your tool of choice.

Irfanview has a plugin that includes JPEG2000 (plugin zip file #2,
"formats"). Try that.

When you have an image open in Irfanview, the top tool bar should have
left and right arrows for moving to the next image.

File|Sequential|Open First File... to navigate to the directory and open
the first file. But the script does not include .jp2 files in its list.
Probably easy to modify the script to do that as it is a text file).
GIMP 2.8 itself will open .jp2 files. And to avoid having to always do
File|Sequential... etc. you'd also want to assign a shortcut key to
close and open the next file.

But that all seems as if it's getting to be too much.

For Windows, Irfanview is excellent, so I'd be spending my efforts
getting that to work. You'll probably end up using it for other things, too.

Well, I modified the script so that it does open a .jp2 file. But when
it comes to closing that image and getting the next there is an error
from GIMP, as GIMP can't write .jp2 format.

If you just want to read the book, use an image viewer.

For example, most Linux systems have qiv, which will let you page through the 
images with space and (oddly) backspace to go forward and back. Luckily, 
backspace doesn't delete the image :-)

If you're not using a GNU/Linux™ system (which seems likely from your mention 
of Irfanview) and are using a Microsoft Windows system, say, search for a 
jpeg2000 viewer for Windows.
