Add an alpha channel to the image (if not possible, change
image mode from indexed to RGB first)
Select by Color (selecting white)

Filters -> Colors -> Color to Alpha

Hi,
I would copy the layer, paste it into a layer mask (add layer mask->from
selection), and invert the mask.
