I have tried variations using examples from Tutorial pages, etc but nothing works. I
have also
noticed that sample scripts in /usr/lib/gimp/1.2/plug-ins that use /Xtns
don't appear, for
example the yinyang script. What is going on here?

Ok I fixed the problem myself. I realised that I was using the Ximian debian packages
for gimp.
I replaced gimp1.2 gimp1.2-perl and libgtk-perl with the original debian ones and it
now works.
Beware of ximian.
